Come and visit the picturesque oyster port in the centre of town.
You will find evidence of bustling activity everywhere you go: row upon row of whitewashed tiles, piled-up sacks of oysters, and oyster farmers preparing to board their flat-bottomed boats) as soon as the tide cooperates. Why not stop at one of the huts and taste these treasures from the Bay?
Until the middle of the XIXe century, La Teste de Buch only had a dry harbour called "du Caillaou". Ships that dock came to get wine or resin et were dsicharging their "pierres de lest". That why bac then, so much houses were built using thoses "pierres de lest". In 1789, local inhabitants asked to have port facilities constructed, in order to develop fishing and oyster farming.
The development of Oyster farming during the years 1860-1870 forced itself upon the La Teste de Buch's port. Today, fishermens and boat constructors are rare in this port, oyster farmers cabanes occupy the major part of the port. They are a symbol of local culture, and are protected in order to preserve the authenticity of the place.
The oyster port is a working place, thanks to respect it.
