The perfect spot to get some fresh air with the arrival of the warmer weather, or to spend the day in the cool of the summer. Lac de Cazaux is the second-largest freshwater lake in France, so there’s something for everyone, on the fine sand or with their feet in the water. 3, 2, 1… go for it!
The beach… without the big waves!

Activity 1: swimming and relaxing on the beaches of Lac de Cazaux
A lake means calm waters. Unlike our ocean beaches, Lac de Cazaux is ideal for families whose children go from swimming to playing on the beach. Shady areas or fine sand in full sun? There’s something for everyone, from siesta lovers to ice-cream aficionados, who’ll find what they’re looking for at one of the nearby straw huts.
Activity 2: water sports
If you’re up for it, canoeing and paddling will be your best friends for a little trip on the lake! Take the opportunity to explore the secluded beaches (some of which are only accessible by boat). And because we’re all about peace of mind at Lac de Cazaux, swimmers, divers and anglers rub shoulders without batting an eyelid (or chill out, for that matter!) and share the 5,800 hectares of this natural setting. Which brings us to our third activity…
Activity 3: more walks, more walks
In summer and winter alike, Cazaux is the starting point for short walks around the lake. You can choose to stay on its sunny shores, or continue the walk to Laouga beach.
A little history...
… and geography!
Straddling the Gironde and Landes departments, the lake is accessible via the Cazaux district of La Teste de Buch. Do you know how it was born? Over the centuries, geological and climatic phenomena have contributed to the formation of dunes on the Aquitaine coast (we all know the most famous one!). These naturally contributed to the retention of water, giving rise to the pretty Lac de Cazaux.
Wild and unusual encounters
A former waterway linking the Bay of Arcachon to Bayonne, the Canal des Landes is no longer navigable. Visitors are in luck: nature has reclaimed its rightful place and, if you take a stroll around, you might spot fish, otters and other water birds. And all around you: the protected Landes forest, with its thousands of hectares of pine trees.
At ease, soldier!
You may notice that certain parts of the lake are off-limits. These are military zones which, rest assured, will not disturb the peace and quiet of your holiday!
