The oyster port

Oyster tasting: in La Teste de Buch, you’re at the right (oyster) port!

The bustling, colourful and iodised atmosphere of the oyster port will quickly win you over. It feels like a village. In less time than it takes to enjoy an oyster, these pretty cabins will become your little home port…

Oyster harbour: buzzing with activity and awakening the senses!

It’s certainly not Jacques Brel’s “Port of Amsterdam”, but there are sailors singing here too. And oyster farmers with their mouth-watering oysters.

Welcome to the world of the oyster farmers of La Teste de Buch

In the heart of La Teste de Buch town centre, your steps will inevitably lead you to the oyster port. Here, around 36 oyster farmers work every day, surrounded by whitewashed roof tiles, pinnaces on the heritage pontoon, buoys and stacks of oyster bags. Let yourself be carried away by this overflowing activity and find a cabin where you can sample our pearls of the Bassin.

Treat yourself to a picturesque stroll around a typical harbour in the Bay of Arcachon

Make sure you know the tide times if you want to see the oyster port at its best! Everything here reflects the local culture. Pinasses and pleasure boats rub shoulders with the traditional oyster farmers‘ flat-bottomed boats. Everyone goes about their business, as happy as a lark after each day spent on the Basin.

A history linked to that of oyster farming

The oyster port of La Teste de Buch reminds you that the Bay of Arcachon is the land of sailors and oyster farmers.

The 1860s and 1870s saw the emergence of oyster farming here. Since then, fishermen and shipbuilders have become rarer, and oyster huts have taken over the landscape. To preserve the authenticity of the site and its activities, these buildings are subject to strict regulations. Location, dimensions and materials: nothing is left to chance! All you have to do is choose your terrace, your glass of wine and your assortment of oysters… and your stay will have that much sought-after iodine flavour.
